SERVICES / INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT

Research behind a considered portfolio strategy.

Our contribution to investment-management decisions is research: understanding companies, markets, allocation and risk. Clients retain their own investment decisions and use financial institutions of their choosing for execution and custody.

THE QUESTIONS THAT MATTER

A thoughtful starting point.

01

Fundamental analysis

Examine business models, earnings, competitive positioning and valuation in their industry context.

02

Portfolio perspective

Study the relationships among regions, sectors and asset exposures, including concentration and diversification.

03

Risk and review

Assess downside scenarios and the assumptions behind a strategy as market conditions evolve.

A CLOSER LOOK

Understand the holding.
Then understand its role.

A company can be attractive on its own yet add to a risk that is already significant elsewhere in a portfolio. Research therefore needs two perspectives: the fundamentals of the individual investment and the contribution it makes to the overall exposure.

The first perspective considers the business model, earnings drivers, competitive position and valuation assumptions. The second examines concentration, liquidity and sensitivity to common economic forces. The objective is a clearer basis for evaluating a strategy, including what evidence would challenge the original view.

RESEARCH CONSIDERATIONS

Questions worth
bringing into focus.

01

The investment thesis

Which business developments support the view, and which assumptions have the greatest influence on it?

02

Portfolio interaction

Do apparently different holdings depend on the same customer base, industry cycle or source of financing?

03

Downside scenarios

How might weaker earnings, a different rate environment or reduced liquidity affect the assessment?
